In short
Good first dates in London are easy to reach and easy to talk at: a free Friday late at the V&A, British Museum or National Gallery, a booked slot at the Sky Garden, the South Bank on foot, or a film at the Prince Charles Cinema. All checked on 17 October 2026. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday nights.
| Free | Museum and gallery lates, Sky Garden daytime slots, the South Bank |
|---|---|
| Under £20 | Prince Charles Cinema: £14.50 evening ticket (non-member) |
| Open late on Fridays | V&A to 22:00, National Gallery to 21:00, British Museum to 20:30 |
| Book ahead | Sky Garden: free tickets released Mondays, three weeks ahead |
| Last checked | 17 October 2026; next check January 2027 |
| Tip | Meet at a station you both know |
Every place below was checked against its own website on 17 October 2026: opening times, entry rules and, where the venue publishes them, prices. We recheck the list every quarter, so the next check is due in January 2027. If something has changed before then, tell us and we'll fix it.
This edition is deliberately short. We only list somewhere once we've confirmed it on the venue's own site, so north and south London picks will join as they're checked. Read how we choose and check venues if you want the detail.
Which London date fits tonight?
Pick by mood and budget first, then read the detail further down. A "late" is a museum's evening opening: the galleries stay open after normal hours, often with a bar, music or talks.
| You want | Go to | Cost (checked 17 Oct 2026) | Nearest station | When |

| Free and calmer | British Museum on a Friday | Free | Tottenham Court Road | Fridays until 20:30 |
| Something to do with your hands | National Gallery Friday Lates | Free drop-ins; some events ticketed | Charing Cross | Next on 23 Oct 2026 |
| A view | Sky Garden | Free daytime tickets; evening tickets from £15.50 | Monument | Weekend late afternoon |
| A laugh in the dark | Prince Charles Cinema | £14.50 evening, non-member | Leicester Square | Most nights |
| Somewhere odd and memorable | V&A East Storehouse | Free | Hackney Wick | Until 22:00 Thu and Sat |
| Dressing up | Fenchurch or Osteria Locatelli | Locatelli set menu from £25 | Monument / Charing Cross | Friday night |
Free, and still a proper date
London's big national museums are free to get into, and several stay open into the evening. A late gives you a built-in topic of conversation, low lighting, a bar or café, and a natural point to say "shall we get a drink?" or "I should head off".
V&A South Kensington, Friday nights
- Where: Cromwell Road, SW7. South Kensington Tube is about 5 minutes' walk; Knightsbridge (step-free) is about 14.
- When: open until 22:00 every Friday, though some galleries close at 17:45. The Main Café serves until 21:00 on Fridays.
- Friday Late: a free, drop-in evening of performance, talks and DJs on the last Friday of the month (not January, May or December). The next is Phantom Constructs on Friday 30 October 2026, 18:30 to 22:00, with a DJ set at 20:30. If it fills up, entry is one in, one out.
- Why it works: it's busy enough that nobody's staring at you, and the galleries are big enough to drift away from the crowd.
British Museum, Friday nights
- Where: Great Russell Street, WC1. Tottenham Court Road is about 5 minutes' walk; Holborn and Russell Square about 7.
- When: Fridays until 20:30, last entry 20:15. Most galleries stay open until 20:20; the Court Cafés serve until 20:00.
- Cost: free, though special exhibitions are ticketed. Booking a free timed slot is advised for priority entry; walk-ups are allowed but may queue.
- Why it works: pick one room each and show the other your favourite object. It's a better icebreaker than any list of questions.
National Gallery, Friday nights
- Where: Trafalgar Square, WC2. The main entrance is the Sainsbury Wing. Charing Cross and Leicester Square are a few minutes' walk.
- When: daily 10:00 to 18:00, and until 21:00 on Fridays.
- Cost: free general entry. The Friday Lates programme mixes free drop-ins with ticketed talks. On 23 October 2026, for example, there's free live music from 18:00 to 19:00 and free drop-in drawing from 18:15 to 20:15; on 20 November the Friday Late is "Hard Art x The National Gallery: The Fete of Britain", with free life drawing (booking opens nearer the time).
- Why it works: drop-in drawing is a great leveller. Odds are neither of you is any good, which is the point.
Sky Garden
- Where: 1 Sky Garden Walk, EC3. Monument is the closest Tube; Bank, Tower Hill, Aldgate and Mansion House are under 10 minutes' walk. Fenchurch Street, Cannon Street and London Bridge are the nearest rail stations.
- When: free tickets cover 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 11:00 to 21:00 at weekends and bank holidays. You get an hour inside from when you enter.
- Booking: free tickets are released every Monday morning, three weeks ahead. Walk-ins are allowed if there's room, but not after 17:00 on weekdays. On 17 October 2026 the site said visitor capacity was temporarily reduced because a lift was out of service, so book rather than chance it.
- Know before you go: airport-style security, no large bags, no lockers. Anyone over 18 who looks under 25 should carry photo ID. The outdoor terrace can close in bad weather.
- Why it works: the view does half the talking. Go late on a weekend afternoon and stay for sunset.
The South Bank on foot
The riverside path from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge is free, flat and never more than a few minutes from a station: Westminster at one end, London Bridge and Tower Hill at the other. Walking side by side is easier than sitting face to face if you're both nervous, and there's always another bench, bar or bridge if you want to stop. Start at whichever end is easier for both of you and agree a rough finish point so nobody's stuck wondering how long this is going on.
V&A East Storehouse, Hackney Wick
- Where: Here East, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, E20. Hackney Wick Overground is about 8 minutes' walk; Stratford International about 17.
- When: daily 10:00 to 18:00, and until 22:00 on Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Cost: free, no booking needed. To see a specific object up close, book a free "Order an Object" slot at least two weeks ahead, which makes a properly unusual second date.
- Know before you go: it's a working museum store with metal grid floors, so flat shoes, not stilettos. Bags and coats go in free lockers, and it can be noisy.
- Why it works: it feels like being let into somewhere you shouldn't be.
Under £20 and nobody's counting
A film, an evening view or one good drink after a free late all keep a London date under £20 a head. Here's what that bought when we checked.
Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square
- Where: 7 Leicester Place, WC2, just off the north-east corner of Leicester Square. Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus Tubes are both close.
- Cost (checked 17 October 2026): a standard evening or weekend ticket is £14.50 for non-members and £11.50 for members; weekday matinees are £11 and £8. Sing-along screenings are £18.50 and £16. Booking online adds 75p a ticket.
- What's on: a rolling repertory programme, meaning older films, cult favourites and re-releases rather than just this week's blockbusters. When we checked, the week from 19 October 2026 was heavy on horror classics, including Carrie, Halloween (1978) and Psycho in 4K.
- Know before you go: the bar serves alcohol until 23:00. There's no step-free access: the cinema says the council turned down its request for a stairlift.
- Why it works: the crowd reacts out loud, which takes the pressure off you, and you'll have the film to talk about afterwards.
Sky Garden in the evening
Free tickets stop at 18:00 on weekdays. After that, the Sky Garden's FAQs list paid evening tickets from £15.50 (and early-morning tickets at £11.50). It's an easy way to get the view after work without the three-week booking scramble. Evening walk-ins need physical ID, and payment inside is cashless.
Free entry, then a drink
The cheapest good night in London is still a free late followed by one drink somewhere nearby. Do the V&A until it closes, then walk towards South Kensington; or the British Museum, then the Bloomsbury squares. Our cheap date ideas guide has more ways to keep a date under £20 without it looking like you're keeping it under £20, and who pays on a first date covers the bill.
When you want to make an effort
For a third date or an anniversary, book dinner somewhere with a reason to be there: a view, or a gallery to walk round first. Both options below include the building as part of the evening.
Fenchurch at the Sky Garden
A restaurant inside the Sky Garden. The kitchen combines British ingredients with Caribbean flavours, reflecting the Anguillan heritage of chef de cuisine Kerth Gumbs, with a five-course tasting menu, à la carte and a chef's set menu. A booking includes access to the garden, so no separate ticket is needed. Arrive no more than 30 minutes early because of security. Fenchurch has the strictest dress code in the building: no sportswear, hoodies or gym trainers. Prices weren't published on the page when we checked.
Music Night at the Sky Garden
The Sky Garden bars run Music Nights from 18:30, best booked ahead. The bars also sell a "Sip & Share" table for two with a bottle of wine, a sharing platter and access for the night. Thursday to Saturday nights are the busiest, and from 18:00 the bars expect smart casual.
Dinner inside the National Gallery
The gallery's two restaurants stay open for the Friday late.
- Osteria Locatelli (Level 2, Sainsbury Wing): open until 22:15 on Fridays and 20:15 on Saturdays. The set menu, served daily from 15:00 to 16:30, was two courses for £25 or three for £31 when we checked.
- Ochre (Level 0, by the Getty exit): a brasserie and cocktail bar open until 21:00 on Fridays, with set menus from £24.50 and a pre-theatre menu. Book via the restaurant or by phone on 020 7747 2525.
Look at a room or two first, then eat. Arriving with something to talk about beats arriving cold.
When it's chucking it down
Everything in the free section except the South Bank walk is indoors, and the museums are big enough to fill a whole evening. A few rain-specific notes:
- Best for a wet weekday evening: the V&A East Storehouse or V&A East Museum, both open until 22:00 on Thursdays.
- Best for a wet Friday: the V&A, British Museum or National Gallery, all open late.
- Best for a wet Saturday night: the V&A East sites (until 22:00) or a film at the Prince Charles Cinema.
- Skip: the Sky Garden's outdoor terrace, which can shut in bad weather, though the main garden is indoors.
More ideas, London and beyond, are in our rainy-day dates guide.
Quiet, sober or nervous?
Every pick on this page works without alcohol and without shouting. For the calmest evening, choose the British Museum on a Friday or a weekday Sky Garden slot, and keep it to an hour or two. Drop-in drawing at the National Gallery gives your hands something to do if conversation stalls.
If neither of you drinks, a late is the obvious choice: the evening has atmosphere without being built around the bar. Our guides to date ideas for introverts and alcohol-free dates have more.
North, south, east, west or central?
Most first dates go best when neither person has a long trip home. Here's where this edition's picks sit:
| Area | Picks | Stations |
|---|---|---|
| West | V&A South Kensington | South Kensington, Gloucester Road, Knightsbridge |
| Central | National Gallery, Prince Charles Cinema, British Museum | Charing Cross, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Tottenham Court Road |
| City and river | Sky Garden, South Bank walk | Monument, Bank, London Bridge, Tower Hill, Westminster |
| East | V&A East Storehouse, V&A East Museum | Hackney Wick, Stratford, Stratford International |
North and south London aren't covered yet because we haven't finished checking places there. If one of you lives in Brixton and the other in Walthamstow, the central picks are your fairest middle ground.
Getting home without the faff
Plan the way home before you leave, travel on your own terms, and let a friend know when you're back. The detail:
- Check your last train before the date, in the TfL Journey Planner or your usual app, not at quarter to midnight.
- Get yourself there and back. Accepting a lift from someone you've just met means they know where you live.
- Only use a minicab you've booked through a licensed operator, by app or by phone. A car that pulls up and offers you a ride is not a licensed minicab.
- Message a friend when you arrive, when you leave and when you're home. It takes ten seconds.
- If something feels off, leave. Every indoor venue on this page is staffed, and all of them are near a station.
Our first-date safety guide covers the rest, including what to do if a match starts asking for money.

Questions people ask
What is a good first date in London that isn't a pub?
A free museum or gallery late is hard to beat: there's something to talk about, a café or bar inside, and a natural end at closing time. A booked hour at the Sky Garden, a walk along the South Bank or a repertory film at the Prince Charles Cinema also work. Pick somewhere with an easy exit in case it isn't clicking.
How much does a first date in London cost?
It can cost nothing. The V&A, British Museum and National Gallery have free general entry and open late on Fridays, and Sky Garden daytime tickets are free if you book. A standard evening ticket at the Prince Charles Cinema was £14.50 for non-members when we checked on 17 October 2026, so two evening tickets come to £29 before any online booking fee.
Where should we meet for a first date in London?
Meet outside a named station exit or a landmark you both know, such as the steps of the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square, rather than inside a venue neither of you has been to. Choose somewhere with a short, direct journey home for both of you, and tell a friend where you'll be.
Do I need to book?
For the Sky Garden, yes: free tickets are released every Monday, three weeks ahead, and walk-ins aren't allowed after 17:00 on weekdays. The museums take walk-ups, though the British Museum and National Gallery suggest booking a free timed ticket for quicker entry. Book restaurants for Friday and Saturday nights.
Which London museums are open late on Fridays?
When we checked on 17 October 2026, the V&A South Kensington was open until 22:00 every Friday, the National Gallery until 21:00 and the British Museum until 20:30, with last entry at 20:15. All three are free to enter, though some exhibitions and events are ticketed. The V&A East Storehouse opens until 22:00 on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Is the Sky Garden a good first date?
Yes, if you book. Free tickets give you an hour inside, the view does a lot of the talking, and it's a few minutes from Monument. Expect airport-style security and no large bags, and carry photo ID if you're over 18 but look under 25. On 17 October 2026 capacity was temporarily reduced because a lift was out of service.
