In short
Cheap dates feel generous when they're planned: a free museum or gallery late with one drink after, a walk to a good view with a takeaway coffee, a repertory film, or a market lunch. In London, the V&A, British Museum and National Gallery are free and open late on Fridays, checked 17 October 2026.

| Rule of thumb | Spend thought, not money |
What makes a date feel cheap isn't the price. It's the sense that nobody thought about it. A free gallery with a plan for a drink afterwards feels better than an expensive dinner picked at the last minute. So the trick is simple: spend thought rather than money.
What counts as a cheap date?
A cheap date is one where the two of you spend under about £20 between you, or nothing at all, on the main activity. The money usually goes on one small thing: a coffee, a ticket or a drink. The rest is free: the museum, the walk, the view, the conversation.
That makes cheap dates a good fit for first and second dates in particular. Nobody feels they owe anyone, nobody is trapped through three courses, and if it's not working you can part at the café door without a bill to settle.
Free, and a proper date
The best free dates have a place, a time and an end point, so they feel arranged rather than improvised.
A museum or gallery late
A "late" is an evening opening, when a museum stays open after normal hours, often with a bar or events. Many of the UK's big national museums are free, and evenings are quieter and more atmospheric than weekend afternoons. In London, when we checked on 17 October 2026, the V&A was open until 22:00 on Fridays and runs a free Friday Late on the last Friday of most months; the British Museum was open until 20:30 on Fridays; the National Gallery until 21:00. Times and stations are on our London date ideas page.
A walk with a view at the end
Pick a route of 30 to 60 minutes that finishes somewhere worth arriving at: a hilltop, a bridge, a riverside bench. Bring a flask or buy two coffees on the way. Total cost: a few pounds. In London, the South Bank from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge is flat, free and never far from a station.
A free viewpoint
London's Sky Garden is free if you book a daytime slot. Tickets are released every Monday, three weeks ahead, and you get an hour inside. Most towns have a hill, tower or rooftop that's free on a clear evening.
A market wander
Food markets are free to walk around and cheap to graze. Share two or three things rather than having a full meal each, and the date becomes about choosing together.
A picnic, with a plan B
In good weather, a picnic in a park is about as romantic as dates get, and you control the budget. Bring a proper blanket and something you made or chose carefully. Have an indoor fallback if the forecast turns.
Under £20 for two
Spending a little buys you a seat, a screen or a game, which gives the date a shape without costing much.
A repertory or independent cinema
A repertory cinema shows older films, cult classics and re-releases, often for less than a new release at the multiplex. At the Prince Charles Cinema off Leicester Square, a standard evening ticket was £14.50 for non-members and £11.50 for members when we checked on 17 October 2026, and a weekday matinee was £11 for non-members. Booking online adds 75p a ticket. Two weekday matinee seats come to £22, not much over the line.
Board games in a café
Many towns now have board game cafés that charge a small table fee and let you play from a shelf of games. Competitive, silly and good for seeing how someone handles losing.
One drink somewhere special
Instead of three drinks somewhere ordinary, have one in a place with a view or a story, after a free activity. It feels like an occasion and keeps the bill down. In London, Sky Garden evening tickets were listed from £15.50 each in its FAQs when we checked, which suits a short after-work visit.
A cheap class or open session
Drop-in drawing, a pub quiz, a community choir night or a run followed by breakfast. Free or cheap, and you're doing something together rather than interviewing each other. The National Gallery's Friday Lates include free drop-in drawing on some evenings.

How to make cheap feel generous
- Book or check ahead. Saying "I've booked us a slot at 4" shows effort without costing anything.
- Know the details. The nearest station, where you'll go after, what time it closes.
- Add one small treat. A pastry from a good bakery, the first round, or a coffee you know they'll like.
- Don't apologise for the budget. "It's free, and it's brilliant" lands better than "sorry, I'm skint".
- Leave room to upgrade. If it's going well, a second stop can be a little more special. If it isn't, nobody's lost much.
How to suggest a cheap date
Be specific, sound keen, and say roughly how long it'll take. A plan with a time and place is easier to say yes to than "we should hang out".
Example: "The British Museum's open late on Friday. Fancy an hour wandering round, then a drink nearby?"
Example: "I've booked two free slots at the Sky Garden for Sunday at 4. Up for it? Coffee after is on me."
Example: "There's a matinee of an old film I love on Wednesday. Have you seen it? Food after if you're free."
Who pays when it's cheap
With a cheap date, the bill question is smaller but still there. One easy approach: whoever suggested the plan covers the small thing (the coffee, the ticket), and you split anything after. Our guide on who pays on a first date covers how to bring it up.
Cheap, not careless
Keeping it cheap shouldn't mean cutting corners on getting there and back. Meet somewhere public, near a station you both know, and budget for your own way home rather than relying on a lift. Never lend or send money to someone you've only just met, however good the story. Our first-date safety guide explains the warning signs.

Questions people ask
Is it bad to suggest a cheap first date?
No. A free gallery or a walk and a coffee is a sensible first date: low pressure, easy to talk, easy to leave. Most people are relieved not to sit through a long dinner with a stranger, and suggesting something specific shows more effort than suggesting somewhere expensive.
What can you do in London for free on a date?
Visit a free national museum on a late opening, such as the V&A until 22:00 on Fridays, book a free daytime slot at the Sky Garden, or walk the South Bank between Westminster and Tower Bridge. Our London date ideas page lists times, stations and the date each place was checked.
How do I keep it cheap without looking tight?
Choose a free or cheap activity, then offer one round, one pastry or the cinema tickets yourself. Know the details, like the station, the times and where you'll go after. Planning reads as effort; a wallet left firmly in a pocket all evening doesn't.
What's a cheap date for a rainy day?
A free museum is the obvious winner: warm, dry and big enough to fill an evening. A weekday cinema matinee, a board game café or a covered food market also work. Our rainy-day dates guide has more indoor ideas for wet weekends and dark evenings.
How much does a cheap date usually cost?
It depends where you live and what you choose, so we don't put a number on it. A walk, a free museum and a takeaway coffee can cost a few pounds; a repertory film for two in central London was £29 for two evening tickets when we checked on 17 October 2026.
