In short
Good rainy-day dates are indoors but still give you something to do: a museum or gallery late, a film at a repertory cinema, a board game café, a covered market, bowling or a climbing wall, or a long lunch somewhere warm. In London, the V&A, British Museum and National Gallery open late on Fridays and V&A East until 22:00 on Thursdays (checked 17 October 2026).

Rain is the most predictable thing about dating in Britain, so the best plan is one that doesn't mind it. The ideas below are all indoors, easy to reach, and most work in any town, with checked London examples where we have them.
A good rainy-day date is one that would still be a good date if it were sunny: somewhere warm, with something to look at or do, where you can talk without shouting and leave without a soaking.
Have a plan B ready
The simplest rain-proofing is a fallback chosen when you make the plan. If your first idea is outdoors, pick somewhere indoors near the same meeting point, then mention it.
Example: "Let's do the river walk on Saturday. If it's chucking it down, there's a café by the station we can hide in instead."
Then nobody has to cancel or scramble on the day, and you've shown you thought about it.
Museums and galleries
Big museums are warm, dry, often free, and full of things to talk about. Evenings are quieter and feel more like a night out. Pick one room each and show the other your favourite object; it beats any list of questions.
In London, these were checked on the museums' own websites on 17 October 2026, and all are free to enter:
| Night | Open late | Until |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | V&A East Storehouse and V&A East Museum, east London | 22:00 |
| Friday | V&A South Kensington | 22:00 |
| Friday | National Gallery, Trafalgar Square | 21:00 |
| Friday | British Museum, Bloomsbury | 20:30 |
| Saturday | V&A East Storehouse, Hackney Wick | 22:00 |
Stations, cafés and entry details are on our London date ideas page. Outside London, most cities and many towns have a museum or gallery with free or cheap entry; check its website for late openings before you go.
Cinema
Repertory and independent cinemas often have a bar, cheaper tickets and older films that are more fun to talk about than this week's blockbuster. In London, the Prince Charles Cinema off Leicester Square charged £14.50 for a standard evening ticket for non-members and £11 for a weekday matinee when we checked, and its bar serves until 23:00.
A film works best as a second date, because you can't talk during it. On a first date, meet for a drink before, and leave time after to argue about the ending.
Games
- Board game cafés keep you warm for hours on a table fee and a drink, and staff will often suggest a game if you're stuck.
- Bowling, crazy golf and table tennis bars are noisy but cheerful, and good if conversation needs a nudge.
- Pub quizzes run on weeknights in most towns. Enter as a team of two and see who knows what.
Covered markets and food halls
Indoor markets and food halls let you graze, wander and choose together, and splitting small plates sidesteps the bill question. Go at lunchtime rather than peak evening hours so you can find somewhere to sit. If money is the worry, our cheap date ideas keep the whole thing under £20.
Something hands-on
Pottery tasters, cookery classes, life drawing and climbing walls are all indoors, and doing something new side by side is easier than sitting face to face. They book up, especially on wet weekends, so check the venue's website a few days ahead. On a first date, choose a class of an hour or two rather than a full day.
Somewhere cosy
When all else fails: a pub with a fire, a café with good cake, or a long lunch. Choose somewhere you can sit for an hour without being hurried out, and avoid anywhere that only works with a beer garden.
Rainy-day dates by mood
| Mood | Try | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet, easy to talk | Gallery, bookshop café, museum late | First dates, introverts |
| Lively, a bit silly | Bowling, crazy golf, board game café, pub quiz | Breaking the ice |
| Romantic | Long lunch, gallery dinner, a film you both love | Couples, later dates |
| Cheap or free | Free museum, covered market, a pub with a fire | End of the month |

An example rainy first date
Here's how a wet Friday could run in London, as an example. Swap in your own town's museum and café.
- 18:30: meet inside the entrance of the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square, so nobody waits in the rain. Charing Cross and Leicester Square stations are a few minutes' walk.
- 18:40: pick a room each. Twenty minutes to find your favourite painting, then show each other.
- 19:30: decide together. If it's going well, stay for a drink or dinner; the gallery is open until 21:00 on Fridays. If not, it's an easy, early goodbye.
- Before 21:00: head home from a station you both know, and message a friend when you're back.
The shape works anywhere: an indoor meeting point, a shared thing to look at, and a natural moment to stay or go.
Outside London
Most towns have at least one rain-proof option: a museum or gallery, a cinema, a bowling alley, a covered market, a climbing wall or a pub with a fire. Look on the venue's own website for opening hours, since smaller places often close earlier in winter. Our date ideas by place page adds new towns as we check them.
Viewpoints, with care
Indoor viewpoints can be great on a moody day, with rain streaking past the glass, but check before going. London's Sky Garden, for example, says its outdoor terrace can close without notice in bad weather, though the main garden is indoors. Free tickets need booking, so a last-minute switch may not work.
Getting there and back dry
- Choose places close to a station, so the walk is short.
- Agree an indoor meeting point, like a museum entrance or a café, rather than a street corner.
- Check your last train before you go in the TfL Journey Planner or your usual app. Wet nights and delays go together.
- Bring a small umbrella and wear shoes that can cope. Nobody's at their best with wet socks.
- Only use a minicab you've booked through a licensed operator, by app or phone, rather than a car that pulls up and offers a ride.
Our first-date safety guide covers the rest, including telling a friend where you'll be. For more ideas that work in any weather, try casual date ideas.
Questions people ask
What's a good date when it's raining?
Something indoors that gives you a shared focus: a museum or gallery, a cinema, a board game café, a covered market or a climbing wall. Each keeps you dry, gives you something to talk about and is usually near public transport. If it's a first date, choose somewhere you can easily stay for an hour or leave after one.
Should I cancel a walking date if it rains?
Not necessarily: switch it. Suggest a museum, café or pub near the same meeting point and keep the same time. Most people appreciate a plan B more than a cancellation. If the weather's dangerous rather than just wet, moving the date is sensible, so say so and offer a new day.
What can couples do on a rainy day at home?
Cook something new together, build a film night around one director or decade, do a jigsaw with the phones in another room, or bake something ambitious. The difference between a date and a lazy afternoon is a plan and a start time, not the location.
Which London museums are open late on a rainy evening?
On Thursdays, the V&A East Storehouse and V&A East Museum open until 22:00. On Fridays, the V&A in South Kensington stays open until 22:00, the National Gallery until 21:00 and the British Museum until 20:30. On Saturdays, the V&A East Storehouse is open until 22:00. All checked 17 October 2026.
Is a cinema a good rainy first date?
It's better as a second date, because you can't talk during the film. If you do go, pick a repertory or independent cinema with a bar, meet for a drink first, and leave time after the film to talk about it. A matinee followed by a coffee works well on a wet afternoon.
