In short
Fun casual dates give you something to do together so the conversation looks after itself: a food market, a gallery late, a walk that ends at a pub or café, a board game café, crazy golf, bowling, a pub quiz or a repertory film. Keep it short, public and easy to leave, and save the big dinner for later.
| Ideal length | One to two hours, with the option to stay on |
|---|---|
| Best first dates | Coffee and a walk, a market, a free gallery |
| Best second dates | Crazy golf, a board game café, a film, a taster class |
| Dress code | None: if you'd need to change after work, it isn't casual |
| Always | Public, near a station, your own way home |
Early dates go best when there's something going on besides the two of you staring at each other. An activity gives you a shared topic, a reason to laugh, and a natural end. Here are ideas that work in most UK towns, roughly from least to most effort.
Why casual dates work
A casual date takes the pressure off because it isn't a test. You're not sitting opposite someone across a white tablecloth waiting to be impressed; you're doing something together and finding out whether you enjoy each other's company.
It also makes the practical side easier. A short, cheap, public plan means nobody feels they owe anyone anything, and if it isn't clicking you can both leave after an hour without a scene.
Easy and almost free
The simplest casual dates cost the price of a coffee and need no booking.
Coffee and a walk
The default for good reason. Meet at a café near a park or river, get takeaway cups, and walk for half an hour. If it's going well, there'll be a pub or bench along the way. If not, you're done in 45 minutes.
A market
Food markets, flea markets, Christmas markets. Walking and browsing keeps things moving, and sharing food is a small, easy way to get comfortable. Agree to try one thing neither of you has had before.
A free gallery or museum
Most cities have at least one free museum, and many open late one evening a week. In London, the V&A is open until 22:00 on Fridays, the National Gallery until 21:00 and the British Museum until 20:30, all free to enter, as checked on their own websites on 17 October 2026. Our London date ideas have the stations and events.
A bit of friendly competition
A game gives you an instant shared joke and tells you how someone behaves when they're losing.
Crazy golf, bowling or table tennis
Silly, sociable and short. You'll learn whether they're gracious in defeat. Book a single game, not a long session, and leave time for a drink after.
A board game café
Pick a game neither of you knows so you're learning together. Many have staff who'll recommend something quick for two.
A pub quiz
Join as a team of two. You'll find out what they know and how they think, and you'll have plenty to talk about between rounds. Check the quiz night before you go, as most pubs run them on a fixed weekday.
Doing something together
These take a little more planning and work best once you've already met once.
A taster class
Pottery, life drawing, cocktail-making, salsa. One-off drop-in sessions are the best fit for an early date: no commitment, and something to laugh about. In London, the National Gallery's Friday Lates include free drop-in drawing on some evenings.
A climbing wall or trampoline park
For the active. Taster sessions usually include instruction, and it's hard to feel awkward while you're both clinging to a wall.
A repertory film or a comedy night
Better as a second date than a first, because you can't talk during it. Add a drink before or after. Cult films and sing-alongs bring a crowd that reacts out loud, which takes the pressure off. At the Prince Charles Cinema off Leicester Square, a standard evening ticket was £14.50 for non-members when we checked on 17 October 2026.
Which casual date suits which moment?
| Idea | Effort | Rough cost | Talk level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee and a walk | Very low | A few pounds | High | First date |
| Market | Low | What you eat | High | First date, weekends |
| Free gallery or museum | Low | Free | Medium | First date, evenings |
| Crazy golf or bowling | Medium | One game each | Medium | Second date |
| Board game café | Medium | Usually a small table fee | High | Second date, rainy days |
| Pub quiz | Low | Free or a small entry fee | Medium, between rounds | Second or third date |
| Taster class | Higher | Varies | Low during, high after | Second or third date |
| Repertory film | Low | A cinema ticket each | None during | Second date |
How to suggest it
Keep the suggestion light, specific and time-limited. A clear plan is easier to say yes to than "we should meet up sometime".
Example: "There's a food market near the station on Saturday. Fancy a wander round at about 12?"
Example: "Crazy golf on Thursday after work? Loser buys the first drink."
Example: "Coffee and a walk by the river on Sunday morning? An hour or so, no pressure."
If they suggest something else, go with it if you're comfortable. The point is to meet, not to win the planning.
Keep it casual
- Short by default. One to two hours, with the option to stay on.
- Public and easy to reach, near a station you both know.
- Cheap or split. Nobody feels they owe anyone. Our guide to who pays on a first date covers the bill.
- No dress code. If they'd need to change after work to fit in, it's not casual.
- Say what it involves. "Wear shoes you can walk in" saves someone a miserable afternoon.
How long should a casual date last?
Plan for an hour or two, and say so when you suggest it. A clear length takes the pressure off both of you: nobody has to invent an excuse to leave, and staying longer feels like a choice rather than an obligation.
If it's going well, add a second stop: "Shall we get a drink round the corner?" If it isn't, close kindly at the end of the activity: "That was fun, thanks for coming out. I'm going to head off." The end of a game, a walk or a market is a natural full stop.
Casual, but still careful
Low-key doesn't mean low-attention. Meet in public, get yourself there and back, and tell a friend where you'll be. Avoid plans that end at someone's home or in their car on a first meeting. If a match asks you for money, for any reason, stop and read our first-date safety guide, which lists where to report a scam in the UK.
When casual should become something more
If you've had two or three easy dates and you both want more, that's the time for dinner, a show or a day out. Our date night ideas for couples are a good next step. Questions people ask
What counts as a casual date?
A casual date is a relaxed, short, low-cost meeting where the focus is on doing something together rather than a formal meal: a coffee and a walk, a market, a game or a gallery. It usually lasts an hour or two, needs no dress code and is easy for either person to end without awkwardness.
Is a casual date a sign they're not interested?
Not usually. Lots of people prefer an easy first meeting before committing to a whole evening with someone they've only messaged. Judge interest by how they talk to you, whether they ask questions back, and whether they suggest meeting again, not by how much the first date costs.
What's a fun date that isn't drinking?
Crazy golf, bowling, a board game café, a climbing wall taster, a gallery late or a market lunch all work well without alcohol, and most have soft drinks or coffee on hand. Our alcohol-free dates guide has more ideas, plus simple ways to mention that you don't drink.
What should I wear on a casual date?
Whatever you'd wear to meet a friend on a weekend, plus shoes you can walk in. If the plan involves something active, like climbing or crazy golf, say so in advance so nobody turns up in heels or a suit. Feeling comfortable matters more than looking dressed up.
How do I turn a casual date into something more?
If you've had two or three easy dates and you'd like more, suggest something with a bit more occasion: dinner, a show or a day out somewhere. Say it plainly, for example 'I'd love to take you for dinner next week', so it's clear you're asking for a proper date.
